Bespoke Cabinet Making
My background in traditional cabinet making underpins all of my conservation work, and also enables me to undertake selected bespoke replica furniture commissions.
New pieces can be designed and made to complement period furniture and historic interiors, drawing upon traditional cabinet-making techniques, appropriate materials and an understanding of historic furniture construction.
Whether reproducing a particular detail, creating furniture to sit sympathetically within an established interior or producing a completely individual piece, the same attention is paid to timber selection, construction, proportion, finish and detail that I bring to the conservation of important antique furniture.
My knowledge of historic furniture gives me an unusual perspective as a maker: not simply understanding how a piece should look when new, but how good furniture is constructed, how it ages and how it can be made to last.
Made in the Workshop
A small proportioned George II style walnut two seater settee; this was made in the studio to the clients’ specification, using new walnut for the main frame, arms and legs. Beech was used for the seat frame, and old surface 18th century period walnut veneers for the front and back splats, framing, and for the seat rails. Traditional construction methods were used throughout.
A highly unusual private commission that was complex and time consuming, but very interesting to design and make. My initial training at Rycotewood College was on a fine cabinetmaking course that included hand made furniture design and construction.
