Historic Interiors
Alongside individual pieces of furniture, T. L. Phelps undertakes the conservation and maintenance of historic fitted interiors and architectural woodwork.
My experience includes panelling, fitted cabinets and bookcases, doors, architectural joinery, historic locks and mechanisms, as well as furniture forming an integral part of an important room or collection.
Long-term projects include the Grade I-listed Historic Reading Room at the John Rylands Library in Manchester, where work has involved the maintenance and conservation of the library’s oak cabinets, doors, locks, mechanisms and furniture. Since 2007, a detailed condition and treatment record has been developed for more than 1,000 cabinet doors and mechanisms.
Other projects have included specialist conservation of oak wall and ceiling panelling in the early 19th century dining room at Charlecote Park for the National Trust, seventeenth-century oak panelling at Bessie Surtees House for Historic England, and historic furniture and decorative woodwork at Rochdale Town Hall.
My approach combines traditional furniture-making skills with modern conservation practice – preserving original material and historic surfaces wherever possible, while ensuring that interiors and their fittings remain stable, functional and appropriate to their surroundings.

Interiors & Architectural Woodwork
Tim has provided conservation services to the library over almost twenty years, ensuring locks and bolt mechanisms are operating satisfactorily and doors opening freely without snagging, despite some settlement in the oak cabinets.

The close up corner section of panelling is shown on completion of tidying works – adjusting uneven colours on some panels. The surfaces were gently prepared without the use of any solvents, wax polished and buffed off to complete the treatment.
